Rat Kings

At the start of the pandemic we took on 2 rescue rats, Fred & George. Fred was the friendliest fluffy rat ever and George was sweet, but skittish. Within a few months our mischief had grown from 2 to 5, with the introduction of Aries, Atlas (we had a dog called Titan, and moons seemed like a good naming system) and Little Bean. Thus began the saga of the rat kings… is what I want to say but really this project started when I drew the flag logo and began making resin keycaps and coasters.

A few months after we got Fred and George, I began making keycaps for my mechanical keyboard. Quickly I had more than I needed. Then I started making coasters and once again had more than I ever could need. It became clear it would be good to start working on a way to shift the excess but I didn’t want to just open an Etsy (yet). Around the same time I had sketched a simple logo based on a slightly horrifying legend; The Rat King.

The final logo had nothing to do with an actual rat king and was more just an idea.

Second Draft - Mobile

Starting with the view of mobile first I completely overhauled the designs. Several elements were kept; the logo and images, but the rest was fresh and new. Begining with new sketches I created the bones that would evolve into the second version of Rat Kings.

Since creating the original designs I'd made several new resin products and felt it would be good to showcase the new along with some of the original creations.

Landing Page

The starting point of many designs, the landing page forms the initial touch point for almost everyone coming to your site. As such it should draw in the user and be easy for them to navigate.

Bestsellers

Following the ideal user flow, the next part of the site they are likely to see is the bestsellers section. Here the products are listed in a clear and sensible way. With options to allow the user to filter and sort the content to find exactly what they are looking for.

Because this is the bestseller page, the products listed are not all the same type, with coaster, dice and keycaps all being listed next to each other. Further work to this will establish the layout for different product types.

Shopping Cart

The final step in any e-commerce flow is the cart. It's the final chance to check your order, add or remove any items and make final decisions. All to often these carts hide key information and make the user have to think and double or triple check each item. I wanted to ensure this part of the flow was clear and accessible to as many users as possible. It's by no means perfect and because of that, testing and reviews are planned to improve this section.

Making Resin

The resin I use is a two part expo mixture that hardens over 24 hours to be a plastic. Using silicon moulds I can make coaster, keycaps or dice quickly. The resin mixes clear and I then add colour from mica powders or alcohol inks.

This allows me to control the colours in the finished product and create some special effects, such as the smokey green in the image.
